The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) program includes a wide range of courses. Here’s a brief description of all the courses that we have offered at EMC or are available at EMC, depending on student interest and enrollment numbers.
ESL (English as a Second Language)
Each ESL course is designed to develop language skills progressively, aligning students with the language proficiency needed for other academic courses and successful graduation.
1. ESLAO – ESL Level 1 (Beginner)
Focuses on foundational English skills, including basic vocabulary, grammar, and simple sentence structure. Emphasis is on everyday conversation, basic reading comprehension, and simple writing.
2. ESLBO – ESL Level 2 (High Beginner)
Builds on Level 1 skills with more advanced vocabulary and grammar. Students practice making longer sentences, learn to write short paragraphs, and read beginner-level texts.
3. ESLCO – ESL Level 3 (Intermediate)
Develops more complex communication skills. Students
work on understanding and using various tenses, reading short stories, and writing multi-paragraph compositions. The focus is on enhancing both spoken and written fluency.
4. ESLDO – ESL Level 4 (High Intermediate)
Prepares students for mainstream English courses. Students engage with more complex reading materials, such as novels and essays, improve their essay-writing skills, and participate in more advanced discussions.
5. ESLEO – ESL Level 5 (Advanced)
The final ESL course, preparing students for integration into mainstream classes. Students analyze and interpret complex texts, write structured essays, and develop advanced speaking and listening skills suitable for academic environments.

Civics and Career Studies
In the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) curriculum, the Civics and Career Studies course is a combined half-credit course, usually completed in Grade 10. It consists of two distinct parts:
1. Civics (CHV2O): This half-credit focuses on teaching students about citizenship, democracy, and government structures in Canada. Students learn about civic rights and responsibilities, how government policies affect society, and how to engage in civic issues actively. They explore topics like human rights, law, and ways to participate in their communities meaningfully.
2. Career Studies (GLC2O): The other half-credit is dedicated to helping students explore career options, set goals, and develop skills that will aid in future job searches and career development. This part of the course covers areas such as resume writing, interview preparation, and understanding personal strengths and interests to make informed career choices. It often includes assignments related to self-assessment and future planning.
